Phillimore's Marriages - Saxby 1680 to 1837

Saxby is one of the many parishes which has lost its earliest Register, as plainly appears by the dates of the Bishops’ Transcripts given hereunder.

The existing first Volume contains Baptisms 1679-94, Burials 1678-1728 and Marriages 1680-1728. It consists of 17 parchment leaves measuring 12-12¼ by about 6 7/8 inches, bound in stout parchment lined with paper. One blank parchment flyleaf at beginning, entries begin at the extreme top of leaf 2 there is no heading there but no sign of any leaves having been cut out, yet the entries look like a continuation. On the cover, in modern writing, is, “Saxby Register from 1678 to 1728.” Only twelve Marriages are registered. There are a remarkable number of burials in woollen. Writing, good at first, is later mostly illiterate and bad but legible; many entries are badly faded and the parchment is cockled by damp (?). About 1¼ inches has been cut off the top of leaf 14 almost certainly carrying one, and probably two entries. Leaf 15 p. 2 is blank save for two Burials. Seven or eight next leaves are cut out, probably blank. More than half of leaves 16 and 17 are cut away; it is not evident whether they carried entries or not. Condition is fair except being stained and soiled.

The first entry is, “Cary Malchew buried Octob. the 3. Alice Boyfield made affidavit. Signed R. [?] Gerard.”

A curious entry, “Faith, Hope, Charity, the daughters of John Dunsmore and Ann his wife was Baptized December the 11th and Buried Decemb[e]r the 13th 1686.”

Volume II. Registers Baptisms and Burials 1729-93, Marriages 1729-97 including one in 1754 and two in 1780 also registered in Volume II. Also two in 1796-7 on the paper flyleaf at end of the book which are not (as they should be) registered in Volume III. The book consists of 17 parchment leaves (in parchment boards) measuring 14 by 7 5/8 inches. There is one blank paper flyleaf at the beginning and two at the end, the first of which carries the two Marriages in 1796-7. The second sides of the first two leaves are blank, the last leaf, parts of which are irregularly cut away but do not appear to have carried any entries, bears only two Burials on page 1. Several leaves, probably blank and used for Bishops’ Transcripts, have been cut out at end. Its condition is otherwise excellent and the writing is mostly good, widely spaced and very legible.

Volume III., Marriages 1754-1812, usual printed forms.

Volume IV., Baptisms and Burials 1794-1812; large parchment leaves neatly ruled in columns, giving unusually full details. Half the leaves blank, binding boards, excellent condition.

Volume V., Marriages 1813-36, printed forms.

Volume VI., Baptisms 1813 and still in use.

Volume VII., Burials 1813 and still in use.

The Bishops’ Transcripts in the Archdeacon’s Registry, 29, Friar Lane, Leicester, or (marked *) at Lincoln, exist for the following years :—1593, 1604*, 1606 to 1609*, 1612-13-16-17-22, 25
to 28, 32 to 34, 36 to 38, 60 to 62, 70-72, 74 to 79, 81-83-85-91, 94 to 1700.

These abstracts have been made by Mr. E. K. Elliott, of Leicester, and are printed by permission of the Rev. P. F. Gorst, the Rector.
