Phillimore's Marriages - Asfordby 1564 to 1837

Volume I. is a very fine Register, it is headed, “This is the Inventory of all the names that were Christened, Marryed and suryed in the p[ar]ishe of Asfordbye In the yeare of or lord god 1564.”

Two paper flyleaves at beginning contain undated memoranda of payments to the church, also: “Mr. Joh: Airlie Procule (?)“ and “Mr. [blank] Ratcliffe married Mrs. Anice Bersie” (no date). The book contains 32 parchment leaves 11¼ by 5¾ inches bound in stout leather, and is in excellent condition except that the groups of leaves containing entries for 1587(part) -1595(part) and 1609(part)- 1616(part) are rather loose. All classes of entries are registered from 1564 to 1635. On the last parchment leaf are several entries of Baptisms and Burials (no Marriages) in 1636 crossed out. (Volume II. begins in 1637.) Of 2 paper flyleaves at end the first bears two Baptismal entries in 1636. The whole book is so evenly and generally beautifully written that it seems like a transscript almost throughout, although the handwriting changes in 1596, again in 1597, and again in 1602 from which year up to 1620 it is not so good and varies, so that these entries were probably made currently. From February 1620 to 1636 all entries are in a beautiful hand, evenly, clearly and closely written. It is very legible throughout, no entry seriously rubbed or faded, and nothing seems to be cut out.

On a fragment of the parchment lining of the first cover is
“Martinus Hill enter’d 1564 i.e.
He dyed Decbr 7th and was years
buryed Decbr 22th 1621 57
Francis Hill dyed A[nno] 1666 46
Regnavit annos 46 et 5 menses —
he and his father reigned in all 103 years.”

Now Martin Hill, M.A,, was not admitted to the Rectory of Asfordby until 16th January, 1581, it only becoming vacant in 1580 by the death of the previous Rector, Christopher Bersey, or Bardsey. The above note, therefore, is an excellent example of the error into which people fall by forgetting the fact that the 16th century portions of Registers are only transcripts of pre-existing originals and that the incumbents’ signatures at the foot of the earliest pages are not contemporary but made at the time of the transcription (1597-1603).

The first entry is: “Imprimis John Hawkyn was buryed the xth day of May 1564.” 1590. “Agnes Mattyson a poore gath(e]ring wooman dyed 6th January.”

Volume II. is very puzzling, with serious gaps. It contains 28 parchment leaves 14 5/8-3/4 by about 5 5/8 inches. Of three paper fiyleaves at the beginning No 3 bears these memoranda: "The old Register begins in 1564 and ends 1636. The present one begins 1637 and is tolerably complete till 1652, when a memorandum is added in these words: (after the Burial entries in 1652) "The names wanting here were taken by the parlia[men]t Register in Cromwell’s tyme and I can give no account of them." They begin again in 1660 after which fresh irregularities occur, partly perhaps by the binding up of loose sheets. From 1664 to 1694 are wanting" [not so, see Volume III.] "and from that period to 1731 the Register is tolerably well kept." No flyleaf at end.

This Register purports to contain all classes of entries from 1637 to 1731, but groups of entries are so erratically made that it is difficult to follow and elucidate them. Marriages 1637-65 (with gaps) are on leaf t at one end; ¾ of leaf 1, p. 2 and the five entire leaves following are blank. On leaf 7 are “Christenings” 1637-52 (none in 1653-59) then 1660-64; turn two leaves to Christenings 1665, then nearly ½ -page, two whole pp. and half another are blank; none in 1666-79. All the existing entries of all classes for 1680-90 are in Volume III.; there are no entries whatever in 1691~3. Burials in 1637 are on leaf 20, and continue to 1644; there are none in 1653-59; then turn back nine leaves for Burials in 1660-65, none in 1666-79. Invert the book, and at the other end are mixed entries, all classes 1694-1710 (two baptisms only) ; turn on ten leaves for the remaining entries in 1710. Turn back ten leaves for mixed entries in 1711-19 (part); turn forward one leaf for the remaining 1719 entries and continuation to 1727; then comes a blank page and mixed entries in 1727 (part)-31. Condition is fairly good, and writing, faded in places, is legible; the binding is limp parchment.

Volume III. In a small paper pocket-book, bound in leather and marked on cover, “Rider 1680, ‘measuring 5 by about 3 inches, are various memoranda and some Register entries, Burials and Baptisms 1680-90, and Marriages 1680-89. It is in a fragile, grub-eaten state, some entries being nearly eaten away; several leaves are loose.

Volume IV. Baptisms and Burials, 1731 (May)-94. Marriages 1731 (November)-54. A large book of thick parchment leaves in parchment boards, a model register, finely and widely written, in excellent condition.

Volume V. A small, square, paper book in papered boards containing “Births, Baptisms and Burials, 1795-1812, made by Able Brett Brereton clk from certain papers left on record by the late Revd. Thomas Beaumont Burnaby, Rector of Asfordby, dec. Certified correct and complete 1826’ by A. B. Burnaby, Minister of Ashfordby, and the two Churchwardens.

Volume VI. Marriages 1754-1808 (one). Printed forms.

Volume VII. Marriages 1805-13. Printed forms

Volume VIII. Marriages. 1814-37. Printed forms

Volume IX. Baptisms 1813-65.

Volume X. Burials 1813-91. And the current volumes.

The Bishops Transcripts for Asfordby exist in the Archdeacon’s Registry (or marked * at Lincoln) for the years 1561-2 (from which it appears that the first page or pages of the original paper Register must have been lost before the transcript—the present Parish Register was made, as that only begins in 1564) 1565-6, 87-8, 1604*, 1606 to 1609*, 1612-17-21-25 to ‘29, ‘32 to ‘34, ‘37-38-73 to 77-79-80-82-84 to ‘87-90-93 to ‘97, 1700.

These abstracts have been made by Mr. E. K. Elliott, of Leicester, and are printed by permission of the Rev. F. A. Gage Hall, the Rector.
